s.p.a.c.e was dreamt up by a group of friends, young professionals, with a passion for making their world a more equal and friendly place. Those friends soon became a Board of Directors when s.p.a.c.e was founded in 2007. Geof Alexander, Nicole Border, Krista Dislers, Karen Ognibene and Alissa Phillips were directly responsible for the incubation, development and delivery of the original s.p.a.c.e vision - a community centre with a special interest in special needs. As a group the friends have been described as dynamic, charismatic and above all innovative young leaders with a reputation for creative and meaningful collaboration with the direct and broader community.
At the begining of 2010 a refreshed Board set the scene. Chaired by Ben Ikin and with the continuation of Alissa (CEO) and Geof (CFO) s.p.a.c.e was joined by Darren Dejong, Bob Waldie, Belinda Fisher, Terry Murphy and Noush Baxter.
Alongside the Board is a very important community of volunteers made up of clients, parents, program facilitators, the broader community, local and state government representatives. In addition to service stakeholders s.p.a.c.e has developed strong probono partnerships with Architects, Designers and Builders who have collaborated with s.p.a.c.e on all our renovation and building projects.
Our volunteers are seen as a 'community of practitioners'. Their outstanding skills in working inclusively and creatively, in parallel to their commitment and resilience, has transformed them from individual volunteers to a collective of like minded citizens. All members of the community of practice can be held accountable for upholding the s.p.a.c.e values at all time emulating the vision of what it would take to create an inclusive community at all times.
