Inclusive Design PDF Print E-mail

“Inclusive design creates an environment where everyone can access and benefit from the full range of opportunities available to members of society. It aims to remove barriers that create undue effort, separation or special treatment, and enable everyone to participate equally in mainstream activities independently, with choice and dignity.”

– Mayor of London’s Office, The London Plan, 2004,Papworth Trust, Guide to Developing Inclusive Communities.

s.p.a.c.e values the importance of well planned urban design when trying to build an inclusive community. In keeping with this belief s.p.a.c.e has joined with Brisbane Architecture firm 'Arkheifield' and the Design Institute of Australia's Socially Responsible Design Committee 'Design Action' to dream up a universally design facility suitable for use by ALL members of the community.

Throughout 2008/09 s.p.a.c.e fundraised to complete the works. This year renovations will take place and by the end of 2010 Brisbane’s Western Suburbs will have it first universally designed community centre!

In the meantime please be patient with our facility. S.p.a.c.e does not receive government assistance and therefore all funds are raised by the organization itself and the community who support us.

Special mention to the Lord Mayors Community Trust Appeal who donated $100,000 to the s.p.a.c.e facility in May of 2009 and well done to the hard working volunteers who matched that figure – 100 people, 100 days, 100 thousand dollars – what a stellar effort.

Please note that the following opportunity for facility hire will not be available until after renovations take place. Dates for renovation are yet to be confirmed.

s.p.a.c.e. invites people to share in its resources and facilities. We have the Kenmore venue available for meetings, functions and events. We can cater to all sizes of events from small intimate meetings up to large social gatherings. Please contact us to enquire or make a booking on the hall.
